Standard for Electropolishing

Electropolishing of stainless steel alloys in the S2XXXX, S3XXXX and S4XXXX series, and the precipitation hardened alloys is covered by British Standard BS ISO 15730:2000.

The standard outlines the information to be supplied by the purchaser if components are to be smoothed and passivated in accordance with ISO 15730.

Also covered are the test methods for testing the passivation of the finished article.

Typically 5µm to 10µm of metal is removed from the surface during electropolishing; however, up to 50µm may be removed for additional smoothing. Greater amounts of metal will be removed from corners and edges, i.e. areas of high current density unless shield and/or auxiliary cathodes are used.
